I suspect he really means that writing a good story is mechanical but NOT thoughtless, and that the result feels organic. In other words, it tells you why certain movies, books, plays etc.
My only complaint about The Anatomy of Story is that lots of the examples detailed, while classics, are quite old. John Truby is one of the most respected and sought-after story anatony in the film industry.
It dawned on me while I was trying to come up with more refined search terms that what I was looking for was the fundamental anatomy of the storie I actually stumbled upon The Anatomy of Story more or less totally by accident while I was searching for online writer’s resources. When the plan fails, the hero has to improvise to win. These writers make the rest of us look bad, and make us feel like we have no idea what we’re doing. Truby provides a precise set of tools—specific, useful techniques to make the audience care about their characters, and that make their characters grow in meaningful ways.
No doubt with sales in mind, this book keeps one foot firmly in the camp of formula. The foundations of story that Truby lays out are applicable to all writers, from novelists and short-story writers to journalists, memoirists, and writers of narrative non-fiction. If you never write but are just interested in what makes good stories good, this is still a great book. Or maybe they just do by default. Chapters Bittersweet Book Launch.
She is by far the vaguer teacher and I appreciate the clarity Truby brings to certain storytelling ideas, despite my other misgivings. The steps are powerful, but they are not set in stone.
However, Truby may have attempted too much in one space. As all good books on writing do, this one also enhances your ability to understand other people and learn to notice more telling signs in their behaviour. Okay, I’m a little further along.
I will never do this again. From psychological need to moral weakness to a character’s ghost and a hte goal, it helpfully breaks down all the components you need.

Try to see The Godfather, Casablanca, and Tootsie before reading. Anatimy mentions that Aristotle perpetuates vague terms like “rising action” or “climax. So, The Anatomy of Story isn’t exactly the definitive bible for fiction writers, but it’s pretty close. And that’s the thing This took longer to read than Don Quixote And I think re-writing is not a skippable part of the process to becoming a “master”.

I think it’s fairly non-controversial to say “Huckleberry Finn” is widely acknowledged as a great book. Dec 04, Dani rated it really liked it. Way too complicated for what it is trying to do, but still useful.
So I’ve got my own idea stlry what the designing principle is: This book walks writers through the essential steps and items absolutely necessary in a story.
I’ve read over books on writing, and I can throw them all away now. Truby recognizes this and does an even better job of explaining it. I would love to have an updated version of this book with more recent movies and books included.

It will be ths indispensable guide to writing your first great script. I like it even better without changing any of the above opinions. Fabulously insightful, practical, hands-on guide to storytelling. Good for people interested in the topic but aren’t writers? No doubt the steady appetite for books pushing writing to formula motivated the misleading subtitle of The Anatomy of Story.
