Nothing that I might utter could possibly match the depths of my feelings in this matter. If Graves’s version of Emperor Claudius is historically inaccurate, it’s not much more inaccurate than Tacitus and Pliny the Elder. Claudius the God starts where I, Claudius left off, at the scene of the assassination of Caligula. I also like Claudius favorite prostitute, a woman who is kind, wise, and better than the backstabbing nobility.
This series really is just phenomenally good. Add all three to Cart Add all three to List. In that task, he’s successful — everything makes sense. Yes, we are all mad, we Emperors.

This was an engaging novel from the start–humorous, dramatic ans skillfully written. He later attempted to make a living by running a small shop, but the business failed. There they continued to publish letterpress books under the rubric of the Seizin Press, founded and edited the literary journal Epilogueand wrote two successful academic books together: Claudius is also able to quell two mutinies and conquers Britain.
Robert Mesalina begins anew the tumultuous life of the Roman who became emporer in spite of himself. I recommend the book to people who like to read historical novels. And to have it all told in such a way that you were able to learn while being entertained is what made this book an enjoyable read for me. Still, I liked Claudius. It’s a shame that Messalina is such a pretty name, because she was such a vile person. He was a hands-on Emperor and sat on the judges’ bench to administer justice.
Since he wishes to record his life for posterity, Claudius chooses to write in Greekwhich will remain “the chief literary language of the world”. Live the 80s Dream! Unfortunately it’s not in the same class, mainly because it’s not the same type of book. Graves ghe a theme for the story by having the fictional Claudius describe a visit to Cumaewhere he receives a prophecy in verse from the Sibyl and an additional prophecy contained in a book of “Sibylline Curiosities”.
While Claudius spends most of his time before becoming emperor tending to his books and his writings and trying to stay out of the general line of corruption and killings, his life on the throne puts him into the center of the political maelstrom. But he was counting on the tide as his ally. It is a long book pages with many characters, each colorfully depicted.
Romans could be extremely cruel. I highly, highly recommend seeing the Masterpiece Theater series adapted from these novels. Graves, for a good read. Claudius later is invited to Livia on her deathbed and reveals that Caligula betrayed his promise.
