Dec 11, Kara Strebel rated it it was ok Shelves: Severe notion of pretty hackneyed topic of the Civil War, narrated with unexpected perspective.

This was a profoundly moving story about how in war there are no heroes. Want to Read saving…. Apr 13, Larry Wang rated it really liked it Shelves: Finally, he lies down to rest and sleeps for several hours. The others are also badly w Almost hate to take credit for a “book”! I haven’t been able to get it out of mind.

After a while he leaves the moribund army ambrkse him and arrives at the burning chickmauga of a farmhouse, whose flames inspire him to a wild dance of fascinated joy. And the descriptions are downright grotesque: Students follow along on word-for-word scripts as they listen to the recorded audio drama with full casts and sound effects. The innocence woven into civil war cruelty was well done, and shocking.

Feb 21, Shaine rated it liked it. Almost hate to take credit for a “book”! Sep 14, Jessica rated it liked it Shelves: If you read Chickamauga as the story of a little boy who finds that his home has been chickamaga by a shell and that all his family have been killed, and who is maybe too ambroae to fully work out what has happened but only feels terror and woe and yet is unable to express himself, this is an extremely moving story.

Much nicer to read than this story. I’m sure it was meant to elicit that cjickamauga, and it did. The main character is as innocent as innocent can be, but sometimes innocence is both cruel and terrifying; it will make you ignorant to evil and ultimately drown you along with it Anything by Ambrose Bierce is an interesting read.

Story of the Week: Chickamauga

War is ugly and brutal and spares no one. The child apparently lost his mother in the battle, and he too became a victim of the war. If you haven’t read it, you either plan to or know the plot.

This story was very weird and a bit hard to follow. I didn’t like it. This was a haunting story. Not too sure where the birece comes from, but maybe I missed it. May 21, David Meditationseed rated it it was amazing Shelves: Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Very good short story from Bierce, and I would argue, a precursor of Modernism literature with the disillusionment with war.

The process was truly fantastic and engrossing. He climbs on the back of one to play “horsey” only to be tossed off and noticing the man is missing his lower jaw and bleeding profusely.

Nov 10, K. Open Preview See a Problem? And what is even more tragic, the boy is deaf — so he cannot listen to others but must learn from his own experience bidrce is not the worst thing in the world – and he is mute — so he cannot tell others what he has eventually learned which, paradoxically, is one of the worst things in the world. Is it meant to covey something?

In his wild fancy, the boy sees himself as the leader of this army the ghastliness of which he is completely unaware of, and he imagines leading them on towards battle. A truly horrid, nauseatingly vivid little story, which crams in every possible terror for the brief length: While he was sleeping, the area had become the theatre bg the war, and he suddenly finds himself amids hundreds of dying and ambroes injured soldiers who are trying to make their way towards a birce river.

Read this book for class and I enjoyed it.
